Name development for the SKY online video library
snap was developed to give film and series fans access to the extensive Sky Collection: entertainment without limits, with great films and series on demand – anytime, anywhere, and as often as you like.
Namestorm set out on behalf of Sky to find and create the right name for the entertainment experts’ new offering.
The name had to meet many requirements: above all, it needed to be short and catchy. But the shorter a name is, the harder it is to pass naming and trademark checks. Extensive screening was therefore required to ensure that the name clearly stood apart from other offerings.
Grab the movie fun
The name was meant to feel contemporary and package the product in a way that would be easily understood by a broad audience. Even those with limited English skills would have no trouble with snap – the German meaning “schnappen” sounds very similar. Its phonetic closeness to “Schnäppchen” (bargain) was another plus for the naming.
“A successful name shouldn’t reveal how much work went into it. If a name feels as simple and natural as snap, then a lot has definitely been done right,” says Mark Leiblein of Namestorm.
Sky snap has since been replaced by Sky’s new product, Wow.
